Church School Vision and Values
Let Your Light Shine
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
At Castleton C of E Primary School, our vision is rooted in the words of Jesus from Matthew 5:16. We believe that every child has unique gifts, talents and qualities that should be nurtured and celebrated. We encourage our children not only to let their own light shine, but also to help others shine too.
Our vision is brought to life through the phrase:
Let Your Light Shine on Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day
Shine on Everyone
We encourage our children to live out our school values through kindness, respect, compassion and service. By caring for one another and contributing positively to both our local and global communities, children learn the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.
Shine Everywhere
Our values do not stop at the school gate. We inspire children to demonstrate our Christian values wherever they are, whether at school, at home, in the community or beyond. We want our pupils to be positive role models in every environment.
Shine Every Day
We believe that small acts of goodness, kindness and courage can have a powerful impact. By making positive choices each day, our children learn how they can contribute to a better world and reflect God’s love in their everyday actions.
Theological Roots
Our vision is inspired by Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:16:
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
In this passage, Jesus encourages his followers to live lives that reflect God’s love, kindness and grace. By using their gifts and serving others, people can positively influence the world around them and bring glory to God.
As a Church school, we seek to help children understand that their actions matter. Through our learning, relationships and worship, we encourage pupils to recognise their own value and to use their gifts to serve others.
Reflection and Collective Worship
Our school reflection area provides a calm and welcoming space for children to think deeply, pray, reflect and respond to our school values.
Children are invited to share their thoughts, prayers and reflections in our reflection box. These reflections are then celebrated and explored further during our weekly collective worship sessions.
Collective worship plays a central role in school life and provides opportunities for pupils to explore faith, values and spirituality together.
Our School Values
We currently have twelve school values which form the foundation of our school community. These values are explored through a two-year cycle, with one value becoming the focus each half term.
Each value is woven throughout school life and influences our learning, relationships, behaviour and decision-making. Through collective worship, classroom activities and daily interactions, children develop a deeper understanding of what each value means and how it can be lived out in practice.

Leading Lights
Each year, pupils are elected to become our Leading Lights. These children take on positions of responsibility and leadership throughout the school.
Leading Lights support their peers, help lead school initiatives and act as role models who demonstrate our vision and values. Through their service, they encourage both their own light and the light of others to shine brightly.
Big Questions
At Castleton C of E Primary School, we encourage children to think deeply about the world around them through the exploration of Big Questions.
These are questions that do not have simple answers and often require reflection, discussion and consideration of different viewpoints. Each week, children explore a different Big Question, helping them to develop curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the world.
Spirituality
We nurture spirituality through our Windows, Mirrors, Doors and Light approach.
Windows
Opportunities to look out on the world, developing awe, wonder and curiosity.
Mirrors
Opportunities to reflect on personal experiences, beliefs, feelings and values.
Doors
Opportunities to respond, make a difference and take positive action in the world.
Light
The source of illumination that helps us to see more clearly, understand more deeply and look beyond ourselves. Light shines on us and through us, guiding our thoughts, actions and relationships. Through God’s light, we grow in wisdom, compassion, and hope, enabling us to reflect that light to others and make a positive difference in the world.
Inspired by Jesus, the light of the World (John 8:12), we recognise, the light that shines upon us and within us. This light helps us to look beyond the everyday, seek truth and purpose, and shine brightly in the lives of others through acts of kindness, service and love.
This approach helps children make meaningful connections between their experiences, beliefs and actions, supporting their spiritual growth throughout their time with us.
Alongside this, our reflection areas provide opportunities for quiet contemplation, prayer and personal reflection, encouraging children to continue developing their spiritual understanding every day.

Our Vision in Action
At Castleton C of E Primary School, we create a nurturing and inspiring environment where every child is encouraged to flourish, fulfil their potential and confidently let their light shine on everyone, everywhere and every day.
